Hispanic/ Latino cancer survivors can benefit from healthy lifestyle behaviors, but many are unaware of what to do. Attend this webinar and understand how to effectively communicate some healthy behaviors vital for Hispanic/Latino patients with or who have survived cancer.

This is a Gannett Education CE event. Participants who attend the webinar and complete the post-test and evaluation survey will earn:

* Registered Nurses: 1.0 contact hour

Sandra San Miguel, MS, is a Research Instructor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Institute for Health Promotion Research at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  

Over the past 15 years, Ms. San Miguel has managed numerous state, federal and privately-funded research programs focusing on reducing chronic disease and cancer health disparities affecting Hispanics/Latinos. She has experience in grant writing and has contributed to multiple abstracts, poster presentations and some peer-reviewed articles.  

Ms. San Miguel’s research work and interests have focused on community health education and outreach among the Hispanic/Latino population, the psychosocial effects of cancer on Hispanic/Latino cancer survivors  and their families, breast cancer genetic testing, participation of Hispanic/Latinos in clinical trials, patient navigation, patient-provider communication, and cancer survivorship. She is specifically interested in the process of acculturation and cultural competence among Latinos in the U.S., the impact of immigration on health and disease outcomes, mental health, and bridging the educational and medical gap between Hispanics/Latinos and the mainstream population. 

During 2010, Ms. San Miguel was selected as the Latino Cancer Health Specialist for the LIVESTRONG Foundation. She was responsible for co-leading the Foundation’s Hispanic/Latino media outreach efforts and training and supervising Community Health Workers (CHWs)/Promotores on survivorship concepts as they relate to the Hispanic/Latino population at a local, state and national level.  

Ms. San Miguel also has actively participated in the development of bilingual educational materials and public service announcements (PSAs) that have been well-recognized by leaders in the field of public health and health communication across the U.S. One of her most rewarding and honored projects is the publication of the book, Nuestras Historias: Mujeres Hispanas Sobreviviendo el Cáncer del Seno/Our Stories: Hispanic Women Surviving Breast Cancer, which she co-edited, coordinated and translated. Nuestras Historias is a collection of 25 inspirational breast cancer stories, detailing the cancer experience of Latina women as told in their own words: http://www.redesenaccion.org/historias_bk.html. 

Ms. San Miguel is a member of the American Public Health Association (APHA). Ms. San Miguel received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of the Incarnate Word and a master’s degree in psychology from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. She is fully bilingual and bicultural.

Debbie Polisky, MS, MBA

 

Debbie is a bilingual nutritionist, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina.  She has worked 18 years in the healthcare field, both in Argentina and in Arizona.  She was in charge of the nutrition department of the cardiac rehab center in Argentina for seven years, working closely with chronically ill patients (cardiac rehab, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cancer) and providing individual dietary counseling, workshops, creator of frozen dietary meals for patients and also in private practice.

She has worked in community nutrition/public health as the Director of Nutrition Services for several grant funded, community, state and federal nutrition programs (including the WIC Program, Farmer's Market, CSFP senior program and other grants) at a community health center.

Currently, she is the CEO of Words & Health, LLC (www.wordsandhealth.com) offering bilingual health communication services to organizations, the media and the Hispanic community.

Debbie is on the Hispanic weekly radio in Phoenix, AZ, has been featured in several Hispanic magazines and has been on Univision and Channel 44 (Phoenix, AZ), educating the Hispanic community about nutrition, wellness and healthcare.
